The Celebrations of the Ruthenian and Ukrainian Culture in Slovakia take place every year in the half of June, in the amphitheatre in Svidník. For three days the town is transformed into a scene of Ukrainian-Ruthenian culture, left by the ancestors of this village.
The program of the festival includes traditional folk dances, singings and performances of both Slovak and foreign participants, ethnographical and fine arts exhibitions, seminars and scientific conferences. Events of this type have a long-standing tradition and the celebrations in Svidník also refer to them. Since 1956 a festival of folk artistic activity of Ukrainian workers of eastern Slovakia was held there, and the 40th edition was already called The Celebrations of the Ruthenian and Ukrainian Culture in Slovakia. At that time 46 groups and over 1493 participants participated in this event. Today this event is considered to be the oldest folklore festival in Slovakia, which attracts also guests from abroad.
