The festival of traditional crafts called the European Folk Craft takes place in Kezmarok each year, during the second week of July. During three days craftsmen, folklore groups, fencers, classical and contemporary music fans, falconers and guests meet at the foothills of High Tatras.

The biggest crafts festival in Europe

The European Folk Craft festival is the biggest craft show in Europe. It has been organized since 1991. The event itself is preceded every year by a historic march through the city and a festive opening in the style of previous centuries, which means – in the way  mayor and citizens used to do it previously.

The fencers have to conquer the defensive walls and the gate, which is both the decoration on the market square and the gate to the event’s territory. During the festival the territory is full of the atmosphere of old times and you can find there over seven hundred craft stalls for 180 craftsmen. The guests have an opportunity not only to buy products, but also see how they are made and to try to create the products themselves.

The participants of this event take care of a rich program on three stages – in from of the town hall, the castle and on the castle’s courtyard. Actors show the life and tradition of people who lived here in the past.  Children enjoy watching the puppet shows, playing on a wooden carousel and riding ponies. A part of the craft fair is devoted to visiting the city castle, exhibitions and theatre performances. Food is provided by the stalls with traditional medieval delicacies.
